Not really a good day for the greenies today. Turns out one of their favorite forms of “clean” energy — as long as the required machinery is in someone else’s backyard — may be adding to their huge bugaboo, “global warming.”
Large wind farms might have a warming effect on the local climate, research in the United States showed on Sunday, casting a shadow over the long-term sustainability of wind power.
And yet another nail in the coffin of anthropogenic global warming:
A team of scientists led by geochemist Zunli Lu from Syracuse University in New York state, has found that contrary to the ‘consensus’, the ‘Medieval Warm Period’ approximately 500 to 1,000 years ago wasn’t just confined to Europe.
Turns out you can make quite a good living shilling for a theory with a bunch of big holes in it.
As it waits for the resolution of its Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which seeks the outside employment permission records of global warming activist Dr. James Hansen, American Tradition Institute’s Environmental Law Center has received the belatedly filed 2010 public financial disclosure of the renowned director of the NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies.
ATI obtained Dr. Hansen’s Form SF 278, which is required to be filed annually, also under the Freedom of Information Act. The disclosure revealed that Dr. Hansen received between $236,000 and $1,232,500 in outside income in 2010 relating to his taxpayer-funded employment, which included:
Perhaps Gaia is punishing Texas?
“Some of you here may be folks who actually used to be Republicans but are puzzled by what’s happened to that party, are puzzled by what’s happening to that party. I mean, has anybody been watching the debates lately? You’ve got a governor whose state is on fire denying climate change,” Obama said in San Jose.
Hey, they should be happy to do their part to help lefties feel good about themselves, right?
According to a report released by the aid group Oxfam on Wednesday, more than 20,000 people say they were evicted from their homes here in recent years to make way for a tree plantation run by a British forestry company, emblematic of a global scramble for arable land.
It really wasn’t a good day for Mitt Romney today… he’s been caught trying to at least partially walk back his statement about global warming.
Hours after being called “mushy on environmental issues” by a Republican senator, Mitt Romney has tweaked his position on global warming.
Courtesy Jack Heald:
I’m convinced Earth Day was conceived by tea-sipping western European elites who live in mild climates where nature is a devoted, loving and fertile servant to man. I know better. I spent my childhood in Oklahoma and half my adult life in Texas.
He goes on to explain why… and then close to the end, he brings up some things the lefties probably wish had remained in the memory hole:
From the time I started school until I was in college, Time Magazine ran cover story after cover story warning the world of an impending Global Ice Age. “The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, amidst a building alarm about the dangers of a new ice age.” All the scientists agreed; it was coming and it was going to be bad. Then sometime in the 80′s “they” decided that Global Warming was the threat du jour. Recently, that has been changed yet again to “Global Climate Change”, (does that phrase have any meaning at all?) In my lifetime, the experts have wrongly predicted every sort of change possible to the environment. Forgive me for being skeptical now.
I can’t say it any better than he did, so I won’t try.
However, I am not sure I believe that the designated hitter rule caused the world to start to go to hell… though I probably agree with him about the artificial turf.
It takes no effort to point to untoward events after the fact and say, Jean Dixon-like, “See! More evidence that my theory is right!” If it is true that global warming will cause the Northern Hemisphere to experience cooler temperatures, then say so in advance. Don’t bustle to the cameras after things go wrong if you did not, or could not, say that they would in advance.
Vague predictions like “There will be snowstorms and rumors of snowstorms” do not count and are not evidence that the end is near. Take heed that no man deceive you. It is, after all, perfectly possible to forecast that there will be, say, “15% more snowfall in the 2010-2011 Northern Hemisphere winter”, or that “There will be at least three more Pacific ocean typhoons in 2011 than there were in 2010″, and so forth.
What is absurd is to point to a typhoon/cyclone/hurricane/snow storm after it has occurred and say that, “I could have predicted that if I wanted to. I chose not to because, among other reasons, I was busy. But that storm certainly indicates that my theory of climate change is true.”
Of course, it might be true that this storm was caused by mechanisms consistent with anthropogenic climate change theory; however, since every winter has its share of snowstorms, and that this winter is not unusual compared with history, this latest storm is also consistent with the theory that the climate is insignificantly affected by mankind. The same goes for weather events of other kinds.
Read the whole thing.
Last week on his show Bill O’Reilly asked, “Why has southern New York turned into the tundra?” and then said he had a call into me. I appreciate the question.
As it turns out, the scientific community has been addressing this particular question for some time now and they say that increased heavy snowfalls are completely consistent with what they have been predicting as a consequence of man-made global warming.
Global warming. Is there anything it doesn’t cause?
Taking a page out of Ed Driscoll‘s book, let’s juxtapose some news stories, past and present. Ed has posted on a couple of these, but not a couple more, so I’ll take it upon myself to do it.
On the one hand, we have this headline from 2000: Snowfalls Are Now Just A Thing Of The Past.
Sledges, snowmen, snowballs and the excitement of waking to find that the stuff has settled outside are all a rapidly diminishing part of Britain’s culture, as warmer winters – which scientists are attributing to global climate change – produce not only fewer white Christmases, but fewer white Januaries and Februaries.
And then, there’s the recent lefty letter to Santa Claus, warning him that he might have to move:
Dear Santa Claus,
I am writing out of concern, because you may have to move from the North Pole due to the dramatic melting of Arctic sea ice. The Navy’s chief oceanographer says that by the summer of 2020 the North Pole may not have summer ice and other scientists project that an ice-free Arctic is possible as soon as 2012!
Scientists overwhelmingly agree that polar ice is melting because of greenhouse gas pollution and I am working hard to reduce these emissions. But there is probably nothing we can do in time to save the North Pole. I am worried about your safety and your ability to deliver billions of Christmas gifts if the ice cap on the North Pole no longer stays frozen all year. What will happen to your house, your workshop, the elves’ houses and your reindeer barns?
On the other hand, we have Atlanta’s first snowfall since 1882 (that’s over 100 years ago, for the math-challenged), and Columbia, SC having their first snowfall since at least 1887, which is when they started keeping records.
The white Christmas in the South was one for the record books. Columbia,S.C., had its first significant Christmas snow since weather records were first kept in 1887. Atlanta had just over an inch of snow—the first measurable accumulation on Christmas Day since the 1880s.
Snowfalls a thing of the past? Oh, really?
A Spanish scientist who recently wrote a study illustrating the massive failure of Spain’s “green jobs” program has been mailed a bomb, apparently from a Spanish solar energy company. Fortunately, the bomb was dismantled, but the scientist was told that the next one wouldn’t be.
There is, at this time, no indication that Spain’s majority socialist government is going to take any action to find and punish the would-be bombers. That may change, however, and it’s not unreasonable to expect that law enforcement might want to keep what they’re doing under wraps until they have someone in custody.
However, the larger picture shows just how “tolerant” the “green” movement is… if someone debunks your latest meme, you send him a dismantled bomb, and threaten to send a fully assembled one next. Goes right along with, oh, say, descending en masse on a bank president’s home, attacking Tea Partiers, or other thuggish behavior we’ve seen from the left recently.
Thousands gathered in Washington, D.C. to protest man-made global warming. Needless to say, they received a very cold reception from the Obama administration and leftist environut politicians.
Looks like a hostile crowd to me.
Note: This is for entertainment purposes. If the likeness of any of these figures resembles any person living, dead, or otherwise, it is purely coincidental. If any snow person (I want to be PC here) is offended by what is presented here, please melt as quickly as possible. If any leftist nut job in defense of defenseless snow people is offended—get a friggin’ life…or better yet, “chill out”!
AGW and ‘US healthcare reform’ (HCR) are siblings today. ‘Siblings’ in exhibiting signs of well-deserved (for their detractors) and painful (for their supporters) demise. Though, while I believe AGW is in its death spiral (AGW death throes), HCR seems to have more lives than a litter of kittens (HCR – proof of life).
The parallels of each ‘crisis’ are undeniable. On the AGW side there are the ‘warmists’ who are basically saying ‘if we don’t stop AGW by getting rid of all that contributes to it, the planet is doomed’. On the HCR side we have President Obama now saying,
If we don’t pass it, here’s the guarantee….your premiums will go up, your employers are going to load up more costs on you,” he said. “Potentially they’re going to drop your coverage, because they just can’t afford an increase of 25 percent, 30 percent in terms of the costs of providing health care to employees each and every year.
The president said that the costs of Medicare and Medicaid are on an “unsustainable” trajectory and if there is no action taken to bring them down, “the federal government will go bankrupt.”
Hence, according to President Obama, you and the nation are doomed. Link
Sen. Reid has done everything he could to get all 60 Senators who caucus with him to vote for cloture on his HCR bill (Sen. Lieberman – I (NH) ). This has angered those that demand a ‘public option’ such as Sen. Burris – D (IL), as noted by CW below: Democrat Infighting May Doom ObamaCare
With transparency finally coming to the data behind AGW theory, Cope – 15 in disarray, and legal preparation being made, AGW will die. The question that remains is exactly how long the ‘consensus’ theme will remain. The UN will do all it can to maintain it even though the theory itself is now scientifically untenable. That, by itself, should convince anyone who is ‘on the fence’ that AGW is nothing but a global Ponzi scheme.
HCR still has some legs. If Sen. Nelson – D (NE) falls into the ‘yes for cloture’ pile, Sen. Reid will have his 60. Then the conference committee will get to work torturing both versions into one that the negotiators (most likely all Democrats) like. The changes in conference may or may not be considered sufficient enough for another full debate in both houses and the bill could end up on the President’s desk in fairly short order. If the 60 yes votes don’t materialize, and soon, the signature agenda item President Obama demanded will most likely die on the vine thanks to the 2010 election year, notwithstanding Pelosi’s message linked above. Whether you are or not a constituent of Sen. Nelson – D (NE), contact him to let him know you support his “no” vote on cloture.
So, two liberal boondoggles in various stages of death. All that remains is to continue to the fight against both and hope zombification doesn’t take hold.
Despite a GOP boycott, Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), chairwoman of the U.S. Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee and other Democrats on the committee approved a climate change bill that would require cuts in greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent over the next decade from 2005 levels [Article - Senate Panel Approves Climate Change Bill Despite GOP Boycott].
In typical overreaching fashion, leftist politicians are attempting to force unpopular economy-killing legislation through. However, there is a silver lining: The bill has passed committee, but it now goes to the Senate floor, where it is expected to die an ignominious death.
This goes along with a previously submitted ACW post, touching on how leftist politicians tirelessly and tenaciously try to further their destructive interests [Reference - German Chancellor Merkel And The Climate Change “Wall”].
To be sure, the battle to force through legislation based on junk science will continue. Without unwavering, steadfast opposition to leftist environmental lunacy, it is a guarantee that climate change legislation will be passed and the suffering of the American people will last for decades.
Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of the pulling down of the wall separating East and West Berlin in Germany. For the first time, a German head of state spoke before U.S. Congress. German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressed members of U.S. Congress and one of the subjects Merkel spoke about was the need for a global deal on climate change [Article - Merkel meets with Obama, then talks to Congress]. Perhaps a symbolic appeal by Merkel to tear down the climate change “wall” [Article - The European Experience with Cap and Trade]?
With support for cap and trade legislation on the decline, President Obama vows that the United States will play a prominent role in decreasing global greenhouse gas emissions. Obama’s answer to the climate change question is cap and trade legislation.
The Waxman-Markey bill or rather, Taxman-Malarkey bill (H.R. 2998 – American Clean Energy And Security Act Of 2009) is currently in limbo, since health care reform legislation has taken center stage. Beltway politicians have certainly been working behind the scenes on slipping cap and trade legislation through, with very little public scrutiny…so they hope.
If the United States agrees to comply with some sort of global climate change contract in Copenhagen, Denmark, this will surely embolden leftist environut anti-capitalists in America to get climate change-related cap and trade legislation enacted.
If such a bill goes through, it will destroy the American economy, no ands, ifs or buts about it. We think unemployment is bad now, wait and see how high it will be if cap and trade becomes law. In addition, we and future generations of Americans will pay dearly for the taxes, fees and other costs climate change legislation will incur [Article - Leading Climate Scientist: Cap and Trade Could Ruin US Economy | Reference - Treasury Department – Climate Change Bill Could Cost American Families $1,761 A Year]. On October 14, Lord Christopher Monckton, chief policy advisor to the Science and Public Policy Institute, issued this stern warning:
Right on queue, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown recently issued this statement in reference to the upcoming Copenhagen climate change summit:
What would be the most convenient way to oppress the world of mankind for decades to come? What would be the best way to destroy western civilization and/or capitalism once and for all? What would be the most efficacious method of bringing about a one-world government? Global climate change.
A group of global elitists could easily control who and what they want, all in the name of saving the planet or averting a global “crisis”. Remember what Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said: Read More…
That’s what the decidedly non-conservative BBC is asking (emphasis in original):
This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998.
But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures.
And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise.
Right there, in the third paragraph, is the problem with all global warming (or climate change, if you prefer) doomsday scenarios: the climate models are woefully inadequate at forecasting! If you take the weather conditions from, say, a year ago and plug them into a climate model, I’ve not yet heard of a single model that would correctly predict how the weather actually turned out. Therefore, they are absolutely useless in predicting how the climate is going to change in the next 5 or 10 years, not to mention even further out.
Until and unless the “climate change” Chicken Littles out there get themselves a model that can actually predict reliably, I’ll be a reliable skeptic of their doomsday prognostications.
President Obama gave his speech to the United Nations on global climate change. Did he finally say something nice about the United States and its continuing efforts, innovations and successes contributing to a clean environment and becoming more energy efficient? Of course not [Article - Obama Says U.S. 'Determined' to Combat Climate Change, Despite Senate Delay].
Meanwhile, more and more scientists, climatologists and climate modelers are abandoning the carbon-caused, carbon dioxide-induced, global warming (climate change) theory [Article - 1. Scientists pull about-face on global warming: Admit that the earth is cooling – for now | 2. Scientists admit global warming is a hoax (April fools) | 3. It's the Climate Warming Models, Stupid! | 4. FATAL ERRORS IN IPCC'S GLOBAL CLIMATE MODELS | 5. Climate Momentum Shifting: Prominent Scientists Reverse Belief in Man-made Global Warming - Now Skeptics | 6. No smoking hot spot].
It appears the Obama administration knew about the high costs of cap and trade. In the U.S. Treasury Department’s report to the Competitive Enterprise Institute, several omissions or blacked-out words have been found. Was the information in the report so embarrassing and damaging to President Obama that he and his administration cajoled or even forced the Treasury Department into making sure that nobody knew about it?
Thanks to the Freedom of Information Act, the Treasury Department’s report had to be released; however, I guess the FOIA doesn’t mention what condition the report has to be in [Article - 1. Cap-and-Trade Memos Fire Up the Skeptics | 2. Cap And Trade Redux: $1,761 Annually Per Family? Or Not?].
So much for transparency and “change you can believe in”. More Chicago-style politics at work here, ladies and gentlemen.
