Democrat: “You Don’t Deserve To Keep All” Your Money
Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) seems to think that she’s living in the olden days, when the only media outlets were the Big Three networks, the NYT, and the LA Times:
“I’ll put it this way. You don’t deserve to keep all of it and it’s not a question of deserving because what government is, is those things that we decide to do together. And there are many things that we decide to do together like have our national security. Like have police and fire. What about the people that work at the National Institute of Health who are looking for a cure for cancer,” Schakowsky said.
Now, I’ll admit that there are legitimate reasons for taxation, and national security is one of them. But federal taxes shouldn’t be used to support local efforts like police and fire, which can be funded by the people in the area served. Why should someone in Omaha, NE, pay for police in Portland, OR, which he/she will probably never visit? If he/she does visit there, well, hotel taxes will probably cover any costs of providing police or fire service to them.
But what this really shows is the lefty belief–as bone deep a belief as the belief in gravity–that your paycheck isn’t your money, it’s the government’s, and you should be happy with whatever they deign to let you keep.
This view is also at odds with the views of most Americans who actually work for a living (as opposed to the Ruling Class and the able-bodied who are nonetheless getting a gubment check), and that’s why Democrats probably think that Rep. Shakowsky should have kept her big mouth shut (although I’m just as glad she said it). In the age of the blogosphere, this quote is gonna make the rounds faster than the report of the Shot Heard ‘Round The World, and it’s not gonna help the Democrats one bit.
