Media Matters Also Wants To Throw Out The First Amendment
Rush Limbaugh’s opponents are starting a radio campaign against him Thursday, seizing upon the radio star’s attack of a Georgetown law student as a “slut” to make a long-term effort aimed at weakening his business.
The liberal Media Matters for America is using a past campaign against Glenn Beck as a template. In Limbaugh, however, they’re going after bigger game. He’s already fighting back and the group’s stance has provoked concerns that an effort to silence someone for objectionable talk is in itself objectionable.
Media Matters is spending at least $100,000 for two advertisements that will run in eight cities.
Now, whether you call it freedom of the press or freedom of speech, Rush has the right to speak. And if a radio station chooses to air his show, that’s their right, just as it is their right not to air it if they don’t want to… which is what doomed Air America — no one wanted to run their boring hosts.
However, even if they do manage to get Rush off the air, it will make far less difference than they think. From small blog like this one to mega-sites like Breitbart’s Bigs, conservative thought is far more available today than it was when Rush started… for which Rush deserves at least some of the credit, by the way.
However, the left has always been very authoritarian and top-down driven, from the Marxist Communist Parties all the way to the modern day. They think that if they take out Rush, the rest of us will all go away because we can’t think on our own. I got news for them: I haven’t listened to Rush for many years (because of lack of opportunity, not opposition to him), and yet here I am, articulating conservatism in my own (inimitable?) way.
Still, with all that said, Media Matters shouldn’t be allowed to determine what we can and cannot listen to on the radio, so I urge everyone to make a special effort to get as many people listening to Rush as possible.
