Rubio: “If I Do A Good Job As Vice President…”

Freudian slip, or letting the cat out of the bag?

“Three, four, five, six, seven years from now, if I do a good job as a Vice President — I’m sorry, as Senator, I’ll have the chance to do all sorts of things,” Rubio said today.

Rubio did endorse Romney, and his name has been floated as a Veep candidate, so it’s possible that he’s already been approached by the Romney campaign regarding a spot on the ticket.

However, I do question the conventional wisdom that a conservative on the bottom of the ticket would be a boost for Romney. I’ve never in my adult life heard anyone say, “I’m voting for X because he picked Y as a running mate,” and I’ve been involved in political debates with both conservatives and lefties. If it ever did happen that the Vice-Presidential candidate created more interest, it was likely in 1984, when Geraldine Ferraro was the Democratic Veep candidate, which might — just might — have gotten feminists more interested in the Mondale/Ferraro ticket than they otherwise would have been. However, looking at the results of 1984 (Mondale/Ferraro carried one state and DC), it doesn’t seem to have helped a great deal.

About the best that can be said about a Rubio Vice-Presidency (or run for the Vice-Presidency) would be that it would position him well for a run for the Oval Office in 2016 or 2020. Of course, that’s not a bad result; in fact, it’s quite good. But it’s not going to help much here and now in 2012.
