The War On Terror Is Over?
It is no longer the case, in other words, that every Islamist is seen as a potential accessory to terrorists. “The war on terror is over,” one senior State Department official who works on Mideast issues told me. “Now that we have killed most of al Qaida, now that people have come to see legitimate means of expression, people who once might have gone into al Qaida see an opportunity for a legitimate Islamism.”
It’s clear why this official didn’t want his name released, because his comments fly in the face of reality. If the war on terror is over, why are suspected terrorists still being caught both in the United Kingdom and the United States?
If Obama comes out on the stump and makes a statement like that himself, it may please his rabid anti-war supporters (which is a reason he might actually do it), but it would likely turn off lots of other voters. The question is whether or not The One realizes that or will accept it if someone else tells him.
