Lugar Loses Primary
Looks like Dick Lugar won’t be a Senator much longer:
Indiana state Treasurer Richard Mourdock defeated Sen. Dick Lugar in Tuesday’s Republican primary in Indiana, ending the career of the longest-serving Republican senator and putting the seat in play for Democrats in the fall.
I suspect The Hill is indulging in a little bit of wishful thinking there if they think the seat is “in play.” Indiana as a state has a Cook rating of R+5, which isn’t the highest, but isn’t the lowest either, and until 2008 they’d been a reliably Republican state in Presidential election years since 1968. With an unpopular Democratic President and Democrats in Congress being marginally less popular than Republicans, this is “in play” for the Democrats only by a stretch of the imagination.
